resurrection - well, almost
it’s been almost two weeks since the demise of my hard drive. my roommate and his band of nerds put it through a myriad of scans and tests, but the drive remained bullheaded and impervious. frustrating to all those involved because the simple truth was the data was still there. it could be seen, but not retrieved.
yesterday, my drive was returned to me as i sent out a last-ditch plea to the IT guru at the ad agency i’ve been freelancing for. sounding humble and enthused, he was more than happy to look at it.
(i briefly considered going to a “recovery specialist” as well but the rumoured $400 fee was daunting and well, simply not worth it.)
today, i handed the beast over to him around 10 am. at 11:30 or so, he rattled off my main folders he had access to and at 3 pm, i had one CD of data. only the first round of probably three, maybe four, as my photography collection is still being recovered.
i did lose some stuff, naturally. but from scoping out the compressed file of 400MB of data (mostly my coveted word documents), i could only recollect three folders that seemed to be missing. in the grand scheme of things, i could care less about the lost and now forgotten.
as for the drive that went kaput, i believe it will require some alone time with me and a bat, a la Office Space.
as for the geek extraordinaire, and i intend that to be a term of endearment, i owe him a million thanks. though i knew life could have continued post-crash 4/30 and though the 20-25GB of digital crud from my life during the last 7 years seems paltry in the real world, i am sated like an addict as the 1s and 0s return to the flow in my veins. technology, she is most assuredly like a drug.
and as for who you should know in life, a computer savvy individual should definitely join the ranks of lawyer, accountant and dentist.
