remove the blinders, please
perhaps it’s because i’m a photographer, and my eyes are open just a bit wider than others’. perhaps it’s because i’m a biker, and i’m more aware of my surroundings at every turn. or perhaps even, because i’m a diver, i’m more conscientious to look in those unsuspecting places.
i’ve been noticing people’s lack of awareness, or call it a lack of appreciation for daily occurrences. a simple look left or right before crossing the street. lingering a bit longer before rushing off, simply to beat a light. maybe walking in a straight line even. but no.
you see that person over there, texting the mister, the missus or maybe the mistress? clearly too busy giving the thumbs a workout so early in the morning to even notice the approaching bicyclist.
that other guy? looking up at skyscrapers while attempting to stay on the path. though i’ll entertain the notion that maybe he’s admiring chicago’s architecture, he could at least stop for a moment and then look up. not try to accomplish two tasks at once that certainly don’t go together.
four, five, six tourists all in a row on the sidewalk. move, please. though we acknowledge your dollars go towards some of our tourism revenue, this is still a city where people live and work and need to get places. albeit, i do try to slow my pace down and not be in such a rush, i still would like the option to pass you. thankyouverymuch.
when i stop to think about all the chaos the city endures on a daily basis, i’m reminded of a quote from shawshank redemption: I can’t believe how fast things move on the outside. I saw an automobile once when I was a kid but now they’re everywhere. The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry.
seriously, people. it’s not always about you and you only. think of how your behavior impedes others around you. slow down. put the PDA away. stop yapping on your phone for all to hear. move ever so slightly to the right.
this has been a somewhat friendly service announcement from treesquirrel. now back to your regular programming.
