about your business
twice this week, while on bike, i happened upon two separate friends in the most random of places. and both of whom were actually on the job.
the first of which occurred as i pulled up in front of my freelance post. bike in hand, going up the stairs in the lobby, there was brean, a speedy bike messenger getting ready to depart after he delivered a package. we chatted for a bit, mostly about bike stuff, if you can believe that. he apologized for having to disrupt our conversation, but duty had called.
the second instance happened while on my commute home. stopped at a light on lincoln avenue (yes, i actually stop at most lights unless i have them timed to where they’re just about to change in my favor), i spotted a girl donning an iPod while walking two dogs. doing a double-take as she called out my name, i realized it was erin, shaun the dog’s “aunt” while we’re away. of course i had to linger a bit to chat since she had two pretty, shaggy pups in her care. erin left the chaos of the advertising world after a layoff and hasn’t looked back. walking and boarding doggies and kitties is her new livelihood, and an enviable one at that.
i have to remind myself that not everyone labors away 9-5 in an office. some people are fortunate to work from home, at his or her leisure. others have random day jobs that don’t include sitting in a bad desk chair behind a computer. i suppose if i had to choose an occupation that didn’t require an office setting, my decision wouldn’t be difficult. or maybe it would because my options would be too great. a bakery, the ocean, a fashion design studio (if i knew a lick about sewing and designing clothes, that is), a kennel, maybe a flower shop…
